About
This site provides maps/locations of cenotes for independent cave divers in the area around Muyil, and between Tulum and Playa del Carmen on the Yucatán peninsula. Additionally, some general details about access to the cave are listed. For the moment stickmaps are not yet available.
If you’re coming here for the first time, get in touch with local diveshops in order to get accoustomed with the local conditions. The caves are complex and you can get among the best cave diving training in the world in this region.
All coordinates of caves are verified personally. Access to some caves is restricted, e.g. by the need to have a locally registered guide or getting a key from the owner beforehand.

Angelita Deep cenote with famous sulfus layer below 30m. Easy access from highway 307. Locally registered guide mandatory in order to be diving here. Many parking spots. Best to come early in the day due to light conditions. Furthermore, this is also very popular with apnea divers, which can disturb the athmosphere under water a bit – they come later in the day.
Calavera/Temple of doom Almost within the city of tulum. Protected parking with 100m walk to the cenote. Loads of swimmers. Entry via ladder or jump.
Calimba Beautiful classic Sac actun cave, with easy road access. Became exceptionally pricey to dive here in the last years. Traverse dive to Gran cenote is possible, however that one is closed for divers.
Caracol Closed for diving
Carwash Very easy access from the highway leading towards Cobà. Parking almost at the water’s edge. Easy entry and exit and popular for cave diving training. Gets very crowded with swimmers and tourists.
Caterpillar Sideroad of highway 307 leading to this quarry. You should pay upfront in the village of Muyil. This place is known for getting your car windows smashed (and valuables stolen) during dives – best to bring someone to watch the car. Transverse dives to Xulo and Bobcat possible.
Chan Aktun Ha/Regina Backdoor Easy access from the highway, good facilities. Pool with no flow and slightly muddy water. Traverse to Shoam, Regina and since 2021 even to Mayan blue possible.
Chan Hol Classic cave in the area with easy access in a beautiful garden of the owner’s ranch.
Chi keen Easy access, you have to get keys beforehand at Protec Tulum. Maps and dive instructions availble there as well.
Chun-Ya Marked along the way towards Nariz and Fenomeno. As of 2022 seems under development, many facilities available, nice hangout spot. Traverse dive towards Caracol possible.
Coop one After passing the ranch, this is the first of the developed caves along the way towards Tux kupaxa. You can deal with the owners dives in different caves on the premises – Combo with Tux kupaxa recommended
Dos pisos You find this cave on a funny farm with many curious turkeys. There’s really only one dive to do here (or maybe jump around the main line around the first bit).
Dreamgate Popular for cavern divers, less so for full cave divers. A local guide is required in order to dive here, however they don’t check that strictly. The cavern zone is very beautiful, the ongoing cave is not very spectacular though.
El Toh/Balun Actun A cave not very much dived. It is located in a cool jungle location, where sometimes raves are held. The upstream line has many jumps and leads to a moonlike landscape. There’s also a downstream line to the right of the pool, however it is tight and muddy – definitely not an easy going part of the cave to go.
Escondido/Mayan blue Classic cave in the area, that is easy to reach from the highway. Get tickets at Cenote Cristal across the street. There’s multiple awesome tunnels to dive in, a true playground! Also very good for DPV diving (try B–E–F Tunnel!). The pool itself is among the most beautiful we can think of. Recently connected to the Regina system.
Fenomeno A very remote cave further down the road from Nohoch. Driving here with a small rental is not advised, Pickup or similar works well. Often, there’s no one here to collect money. The upstream part is very beautiful. If you follow the mainline, you’ll see a Mayan pot shortly before hitting the next cenote (likely white dunes). There’s is also a hidden jump leading to a nice bone site. There’s also a jump towards Cenote Concha. Downstream part looks tight and not very inviting to enter.
Galaxian “https://m.facebook.com/Santuario-de-Cenotes-1470558853170335/
Easy access to parking to highway 307. However about 5 min walk to the cenote. The person charging your the cave fee assists with carrying the tanks. To get to the water, it’s a bit a climb down in the cave but no rope etc. needed”
Gran cenote Classic Sac actun cave for diving. However closed for divers unfortunately.
Hatzutz Actun Easy to reach by car, big pool without any flow. Gets sometimes confused with Regina (however that one is closed)
Jailhouse Best to check beforehand in town, if the gate is open. There’s a google maps location (called ‘Jailhouse key’) where you had to get the key in the past. In our experience, there was not always someone at the gate. The owner recently dug out the pool – unfortunately, it lost its wild atmosphere and it’s doubtable there will be swimmers coming to this pool. Very nice cave to dive, highlight is the swiss tunnel or the fireplace in the deep tunnel (T right and first jump left)
Kim Ha/Tarantula Small hole halfway from Vaca ha to Tortuga
Minotauro The entry to the plot is badly marked (basically not at all) – There’s a locked were you have to get someones attention in order to get in. Beatiful surface area. Wonderful Circuit along the mainline and two Cenotes to surface via jumps.
Monkey Dust Super beautiful and only recently opened cave. It is quite a drive from the highway, however the road is good. From the parking, it’s a 5 minute walk until the entry spot for the dive.
Naharon/Cristal
Nariz Far on the road after Nohoch. Pickup style car advised, as the road gets very bad in some parts. The cave itself is wonderful and an all time favorite.
Nohoch Na Chich One of the classic caves in the are. Easy to get here and perfect facilities. Upstream you’ll get to the Blue Abyss and Cenote Pet cemetery (DPV needed)
Sac Be Ha Easy to reach from the highway, entry in the jungle. There’s not always someon the premises, the owners family lives in Tulum.
Shoam Closed for diving, only for instagram people now…
Taak Bi Ha Underground cave in the Dos ojos area. connects to Dos ojos, entry point to LSD Tunnel and transverse to the pit.
Taj Mahal Classic cave with very good facilities. Used for a lot of cavediving training. Wonderful cavern area with very nice Halocline. Highlight is called the Chinese garden
The Pit Probably the most beautiful cavern in the region, best to at noon when the sun is highest. Locally registered guide mandatory to enter. Traverse to Tak bi haa possible.
Tortuga Easy to reach on the road after Kim ha. Have to pay at the farm close to the highway. A lot of small hungry fish in the pool. Very cool deep section of the cave.
Tux Kupaxa “About 30min ride of highway 307 on a dirt road that is in pretty good shape. Last bit of road to the parking is quite steep and rocky, a 4×4 helps.
Dive first T-left if you don’t have a stickmap and you will be happy: There’s a lot of marked mastodon bones (INAH pyramid signs you can’t miss)”
Vaca Ha The first of three caves on the property. Very close from the highway, easy parking and access.
Xulo
Yax Chen Ox bel ha cave before the water flows in to the ocean. Entry point for a lot of exploration in the area. The cave has a lot microbial growth. Very unique cave, as you surface in many mangrove cenotes along the way and see Tarpoons swimming around.
Zacil-Ha/Luke‘s hope Cenote very popular with local tourists for swimming. For diving, you’ll hit the mainline from Carwash cenote towards the room of tears.
